Woven in India, this rug uses a combination of two traditional Persian motifs. The larger design is called Mahi. This is the large medallion in the center that “steps” outward toward similar larger medallions. This represents a pool of water and the contentric circles that form when a pebble is dropped into the water. The second design is called "Herati" which means "fish". This is the small repeating pattern in the field representing two fish swimming around the reflection of the moon.
